Statement

I have worked as an artist since 1971, primarily as a painter—though also as a sculptor. My art since 2010 has been digital with work ranging from “pure” abstraction to “pure” realism. My preference and grounding in visual art is abstraction even though I ongoingly study the work of such classical representational masters as Sandro Botticelli, Fra Filippo Lippi, and Johannes Vermeer. The source of most of my pieces is a very deep love of beauty along with the observation of visual details & patterns and deep personal insights. In fact, one of the goals of my work is to help viewers “see” as opposed to simply “look at” what surrounds them.

Calling myself a colorist, I work in both recognizable and abstract imagery. Even after decades of studying color, refining my understanding and mastery, there seems to be a limitless amount more to learn. Reaction to color—at its core—is emotional. This reaction supports my desire for my viewers to become emotionally involved yet still enjoy a kind of “aha” or “mind opening” experience. Additionally, to enhance each person’s physical and emotional involvement, my finished pieces are usually relatively large, generally ranging from about nine to forty square feet. I also print smaller versions to fit individual or corporate needs and desires.

Ideally what I want is for people to surrender to the experience offered by the art. Beauty, mystery, fine balance can act as a shock to the mind and routine. When someone is fully immersed in art, they are brought present to the now. Ideally, viewers would drop their daily concerns and inner chatter and become one with each piece, afloat in it’s world. Also, my work is intended to be actually felt emotionally and physically—which is the primary reason I am a colorist and prefer to work large—and not so much intellectually. As one of my favorite painters, Ellsworth Kelly said, “That’s how I want my paintings to be—headless. Not thought but felt. I like to put the mind to rest.”

My work has been exhibited in over seventy-five solo & group shows in the United States and abroad. The art is in public, private, non-profit and corporate collections on six continents.

“In the end, beauty will save the world.”
